Mussa Makame: Managing Director, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation  

Mussa Makame has served as Managing Director of the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) since February 2023, when President Samia Suluhu Hassan appointed him to lead Tanzania’s national oil company. He assumed office at a pivotal moment for the country’s energy sector, with TPDC playing a central role in natural gas development, petroleum infrastructure, and efforts to maximise the extractives industry’s contribution to Tanzania’s economic growth. Having previously served on TPDC’s Board of Directors, Makame brought decades of commercial, financial, and governance experience from both the public and private sectors to the role.   

Before joining TPDC, Makame built a career spanning more than two decades across energy, telecommunications, consumer goods, and professional services. He served as Senior Commercial Adviser at Equinor Tanzania (2016–2020) after ten years as Vice President for Finance and Corporate Affairs at Wentworth Resources (2006–2016), where he oversaw finance, corporate affairs, and government relations during a period of significant investment in Tanzania’s gas industry. Earlier in his career, he was Chief Internal Auditor at Airtel Tanzania (2005–2006), Finance Manager at Coca-Cola Kwanza (2003–2005), and Senior Associate at PwC Tanzania (1999–2003). After leaving Equinor, he worked as an independent consultant before serving as Managing Consultant at A2Z Consulting, ahead of his appointment to TPDC.  

Makame’s academic and professional qualifications reflect a strong grounding in finance and corporate leadership. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Dar es Salaam between 1996 and 1999, qualified as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with the National Board of Accountants and Auditors, and later completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the Warwick Business School between 2011 and 2015. His blend of financial expertise, commercial leadership, and governance experience has made him one of Tanzania’s most experienced executives in the oil and gas sector.  

Today, Makame leads TPDC as it seeks to strengthen Tanzania’s position as a regional energy player, expand commercial participation across the petroleum value chain, and unlock greater value from the country’s natural gas resources. His background in multinational energy companies, finance, and corporate strategy positions him well to steer the corporation through its next phase of growth.
