Mwasi Wilmore, CEO, Ubongo

Mwasi Wilmore is one of Africa’s leading voices in educational innovation and social entrepreneurship. She is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ubongo, the Tanzania-founded social enterprise whose educational television, radio and digital content reaches millions of children across Africa in multiple languages. She has led the organisation since April 2022, expanding its role beyond children’s edutainment to contribute more prominently to regional conversations on education policy, foundational learning and human capital development.

Under Wilmore’s leadership, Ubongo has increasingly engaged with national and regional development priorities, including Tanzania’s Vision 2050 agenda. She has advocated placing early childhood development at the centre of national planning, reflecting her broader focus on using education, technology and media to strengthen learning outcomes and long-term human capital.

Wilmore brings to Ubongo a career spanning social enterprise, entrepreneurship, technology, consulting and organisational transformation. From 2017 to 2022, she served as Principal at Africa Insight Advisors, advising organisations across the continent on strategy, growth, market expansion and organisational transformation. She also served as Chief Executive Officer of Camara Education Tanzania from 2018 to 2019, transforming the organisation from a donor-funded NGO into a sustainable social enterprise.

Earlier, Wilmore co-founded Telesis Tanzania Limited, where she served from 2011 to 2014 and helped secure US$3.6 million in seed funding. The company became East Africa’s first 4G LTE Mobile Virtual Network Aggregator before being acquired by Millicom International Ventures. Her earlier professional experience includes consulting roles at Deloitte & Touche in New York and at Deloitte Consulting, where she advised Fortune 100 companies, governments and financial institutions on enterprise risk, technology governance and business transformation.

Her academic background spans finance, business and international management. Wilmore graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Banking from Lincoln University in 2004, and later earned a Master of Arts in International Management with honours from King’s College London between 2009 and 2010. Her executive career has further deepened her expertise in strategy, governance, organisational change and social innovation.

Beyond her role at Ubongo, Wilmore serves on the Board of Camara Education Tanzania and the Advisory Board of Age of Learning, supporting technology-enabled education initiatives. Through these roles, she continues to combine private-sector discipline with a mission-driven approach to learning.

Wilmore’s career reflects a distinctive intersection of business, technology and social impact. At Ubongo, she is helping to demonstrate how media and technology can be deployed at scale to address Africa’s education challenges, while positioning the organisation as a leading model for educational innovation on the continent and beyond.
