Hon. Mussa Azzan Zungu has been elected as the Speaker of the 13th Parliament of Tanzania, securing 378 of 383 votes cast by Members of Parliament (MPs). Zungu’s political career spans over two decades, marked by steady progress from local governance to national leadership. He has represented the Ilala Constituency as Member of Parliament since December 2005, retaining his seat through successive elections. He served as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly from 2021 until he was elected Speaker. Over the years, he has chaired key parliamentary committees, including the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Security, and briefly served as a Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office in 2020, responsible for Union Affairs and Environment. His ambitions centre on strengthening governance, improving legislative efficiency, and ensuring that parliamentary processes serve the country’s development and citizens’ welfare.

Before entering national politics, Zungu built significant experience at the local government level. From 2002 to 2005, he served as a councillor and Deputy Mayor of Ilala Municipality, while also chairing the Ilala Municipal Investment Committee. These roles provided him with firsthand insight into municipal administration, development planning, and public service, laying a solid foundation for his later contributions at the national level.

Zungu’s educational journey blends technical training with diplomatic studies. He attended St. Joseph Primary School, followed by Kinondoni and Tambaza Secondary Schools. He trained at the Military College of Aviation in Tanzania and Canada, qualifying as a Principal Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. He later pursued executive and diplomatic programs at institutions including the Institute of International Relations in Cairo, the Tanzania Mozambique Centre for Foreign Relations, and the National Defence College, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to learning and strategic leadership.

From his early career as an aviation engineer to his current position as Speaker, Mussa Zungu’s path reflects a combination of technical expertise, disciplined leadership, and dedication to public service. His journey underscores why he remains a central and influential figure in Tanzania’s parliamentary and political landscape.
