Dr. Mwigulu L. Nchemba, Tanzania Minister of Finance
Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba is the current Minister for Finance of the United Republic of Tanzania. He is a seasoned economist, and a prominent political figure within the ruling party, Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM). He has served in various ministerial and parliamentary capacities over the years.
Born in Tanzania, Dr. Nchemba’s education began at Makunda Primary School (1987–1993), followed by Ilboru Secondary School and Mazengo Secondary School, where he completed his O-levels and A-levels, respectively. He then pursued higher education at the University of Dar es Salaam, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Economics (2001–2004), followed by a Master’s degree in Economics (2004–2006). His academic journey culminated in a PhD in Economics from the same university (2012–2018). In 2002, he obtained a certificate from the Uongozi Institute, reflecting his commitment to leadership development.
Professionally, Dr. Nchemba began his career as Economist at the Bank of Tanzania, where he served from 2006 to 2010. His transition into politics saw a rapid rise within CCM, serving as Treasurer (2011–2012) and later as Deputy Secretary General (2012–2015). He was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2010 and has maintained his seat across successive terms up to 2025.
Dr. Nchemba has held several key cabinet positions in government. In 2016, he was appointed Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, and later served as Minister for Home Affairs (2016–2018). In 2020, he briefly held the role of Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs before being appointed as Minister for Finance in 2021, a role he holds to date.
In his career, he has also served on several influential parliamentary committees, including the Finance and Economic Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Foreign Affairs, Security and Defense Committee. Dr. Nchemba is known for his pragmatic economic policies and commitment to fiscal discipline, playing a central role in steering Tanzania’s economic planning and financial governance.
