Politician and Academic Professor, Hon. Kitila Mkumbo

Hon. Prof. Kitila Alexander Mkumbo is a prominent member of Tanzania’s ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party. Before politics, Prof. Mkumbo distinguished himself as a leading educationist and psychologist. He spent over two decades at the University of Dar es Salaam, where he progressed from Administrative Officer (1999–2003) to Assistant Lecturer (2003–2008), Lecturer (2008–2011), and ultimately to Senior Lecturer at the School of Education (2011–2014).

 

During his tenure at the university, he earned several accolades, including being named the best lecturer at the Dar es Salaam School of Education in both 2012 and 2014. He also won the best academic presentation award among Master of Psychology students in the United Kingdom in 2008. He received a prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship for his Master of Arts degree from 2006 to 2008.

 

Prof. Mkumbo has participated in more than 17 international academic and professional conferences since 2011. He supervised over 35 master’s and doctoral students between 2009 and 2019 and has provided consultancy services to major international organisations, including UNICEF, UNESCO, AMREF, and TACAIDS. Furthermore, he is a member of more than seven professional associations.

 

His entry into public administration began when the late President John Pombe Magufuli appointed him as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water, a position he held from 2017 to 2020. Following the transition to President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration, he was appointed to three consecutive ministerial positions: Minister of State in the President’s Office (Investment) from 2020 to 2021, Minister for Industry and Trade from 2021 to 2022, and Minister of State in the President’s Office (Investment and Planning) from 2023 to 2025.

 

Within CCM, he has held influential advisory roles, serving as a policy and strategy adviser at party headquarters and as a member and secretary of the committee of professionals that drafted the party’s 2020 general elections manifesto.
