Profile
H. E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar
Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, the sitting President of Zanzibar, is pursuing a second term after being officially nominated by the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) as its presidential candidate for Zanzibar’s general election in October 2025. His endorsement by over 1,200 CCM delegates highlights the party’s confidence in his leadership and its desire for continuity. He will face opposition challengers, including ACT-Wazalendo’s Othman Masoud, setting the scene for a competitive contest.
Mwinyi first took office in 2020. He has prioritised strengthening Zanzibar’s blue economy, healthcare reforms, and expanding tourism, positioning the islands as a crucial driver of Tanzania’s growth. Before becoming President, he served as Tanzania’s Minister of Defence and National Service, as well as Minister of Health, bringing decades of public service and political experience to the role.
Born in 1966, the Head of State is the son of former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi. He studied medicine at the University of Dar es Salaam and later specialised in internal medicine and gastroenterology in the United Kingdom. His professional and academic background has shaped his approach to governance, which blends pragmatism with a focus on long-term institutional strengthening.
As Zanzibar approaches the 2025 elections, Mwinyi’s campaign is expected to emphasise continuity of reforms, economic growth, and national unity, while manoeuvring through the increasingly competitive political landscape.
