Profile
Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Daniel Sillo
Daniel Baran Sillo, the Babati Rural Member of Parliament, has been unanimously elected as the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, securing all 371 votes cast. He becomes the 17th Deputy Speaker since the establishment of Parliament and the sole candidate for the position. His election follows Mussa Azzan Zungu’s as Speaker earlier in the week, leaving the Deputy Speaker seat vacant.
Before the vote, Sillo pledged to work closely with Speaker Zungu to manage parliamentary proceedings and to uphold the Constitution and the rules of the National Assembly. Immediately after his election, he took the oath of office administered by the Speaker and reaffirmed his commitment to serving the citizens of Tanzania with integrity and diligence. His appointment has been widely welcomed as a sign of steady leadership and renewed confidence in Parliament.
Sillo’s political career began in 2015 when he first contested the Babati Rural parliamentary seat. Though he did not win on his first attempt, he returned in 2020 as the CCM candidate and was elected to represent his constituency. Since entering Parliament, he has established a reputation for discipline, analytical skill, and commitment to public service.
He has held several key leadership roles, including Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Budget, Chairperson of Parliament, and Deputy Minister for Home Affairs. His experience in Parliament, combined with his expertise in finance and governance, has prepared him for his current role as Deputy Speaker, where he oversees legislative proceedings and supports the Speaker in managing parliamentary business.
Sillo has a strong academic foundation in finance and public administration. He holds a Master of Business Administration in Finance, a Postgraduate Diploma in Tax Management, and an Advanced Diploma in Accountancy. This education has provided him with deep expertise in budget analysis, taxation, and public resource management.
Before entering politics, he worked for two decades at the Tanzania Revenue Authority from 2000 to 2020 as a Senior Officer. In this role, he developed extensive experience in revenue management, tax collection, and financial accountability, skills that continue to inform his work as a legislator and Deputy Speaker.
