The high-profile defections from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) to opposition parties, quickly followed by presidential endorsements, have once again dominated Tanzania’s political discourse. For some, this is viewed as a strategic masterstroke that reinvigorates the opposition’s electoral prospects. For others, it is a risky move that could backfire in the long run. Former Minister for Livestock and Fisheries and former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kisesa Constituency, Luhaga Mpina, crossed over to ACT-Wazalendo just days after being dropped from CCM’s parliamentary aspirant shortlist. He was promptly named the party’s presidential flagbearer.
