The treason trial of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu has been postponed again to 18 August 2025, pending a decision from the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court on whether the hearing will be livestreamed when it proceeds to the High Court. The prosecution has requested a ban on livestreaming, citing concerns for witness protection, despite the proceedings having been live-streamed during earlier preliminary stages. Lissu strongly opposed this, arguing that the prohibition would amount to conducting the trial “in the dark”, undermining transparency in a politically charged case centred on demands for electoral reform ahead of the October general elections.
