Tanzania in Talks with IFAD to Create Job Opportunities from Deep-Sea Fishing, Blue Economy
Tanzania has announced plans to expand employment opportunities for women and young people by increasing investment in deep-sea fishing and the blue economy.
Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba made the announcement during discussions with International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Vice-President Geraldine Mukeshimana on the sidelines of the Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa, United States, on 20 October 2026.
The Prime Minister acknowledged IFAD’s financial support for deep-sea fishing projects under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, as well as for blue economy initiatives implemented by Zanzibar’s Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries. He emphasised that these projects are a government priority because of their potential to create jobs, particularly for women and youth.
Dr. Mukeshimana commended Tanzania’s contribution to regional food security, describing the country as a reliable food producer that supports neighbouring countries. She also praised the Prime Minister’s experience in agriculture and finance, noting its importance in addressing development challenges.
IFAD reaffirmed its commitment to financing initiatives that reduce hunger and poverty by strengthening rural livelihoods, improving market access and enhancing climate resilience. The Borlaug Dialogue, which began on 20 October, brings together global stakeholders to discuss food security and agricultural development.
