A total of 621 residents in Arusha received cancer screening at a special camp at Kaloleni Hospital, with 16 people referred for further investigations and specialised care after screening identified findings requiring additional assessment. The beneficiaries comprised 343 women and 278 men. The exercise, conducted by the Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) in collaboration with the Office of the Arusha Urban Member of Parliament and Kaloleni Hospital, sought to bring cancer screening closer to residents and promote early detection, including among people without obvious symptoms.

Among the findings, six patients had breast lumps, and two had findings requiring further assessment for possible breast cancer. Four patients had early cervical changes requiring additional assessment for possible cervical cancer, and nine men had findings requiring further evaluation for possible prostate cancer. The 16 patients identified for follow-up were referred according to their individual medical needs. Beyond screening, the camp provided residents with information on cancer and other non-communicable diseases. ORCI Specialist Oncologist Dr. Maguha Stephano said the exercise also provided an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between ORCI and local health providers and to build the capacity of health professionals at Kaloleni Hospital in early cancer detection.
