Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to increasing investment in nurses and midwives as part of efforts to strengthen the health system and improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare services. He said the government would continue to develop health systems that provide safe, equitable, and affordable services centred on citizens’ needs.

Sustained investment in the nursing and midwifery workforce could create opportunities for Tanzanians through increased demand for training, professional development, and employment in the health sector, particularly if the commitment translates into expanded recruitment and capacity-building programmes.

Dr. Mwinyi made the remarks on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Zanzibar Minister of Education and Vocational Training Lela Muhammed Mussa. The minister represented the President at the opening of the 17th Scientific Conference and General Meeting of the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Nursing and Midwifery (ECSACONM) at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Unguja.

The focus on nurses and midwives also presents potential opportunities for institutions involved in healthcare education, professional training and skills development, as well as for qualified Tanzanians seeking careers in the sector. However, the statement does not specify new recruitment targets, funding allocations or specific programmes, so these opportunities remain contingent on how the government implements its stated commitment.
