Tanzania’s executive leadership is set for a key shift after the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) endorsed Energy Minister Deogratius John Ndejembi as its Vice President nominee. The decision was finalised by the party’s Central Committee and National Executive Committee in Dodoma, setting the stage for parliamentary confirmation in early September.

Ndejembi’s nomination follows the announced departure of Vice President Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, whose resignation takes effect on 4 September 2026, after less than a year in office. Nchimbi indicated he was stepping aside to allow President Samia Suluhu Hassan to realign her administration’s top leadership structure. Alongside accepting his resignation, CCM organs also initiated internal party disciplinary proceedings regarding his recent public profile.

Ndejembi, who serves as the Member of Parliament for Chamwino, has been a central figure in advancing the national energy agenda, including expanding rural electrification and major strategic power generation projects. His transition into the second-highest office signals an emphasis on economic implementation and infrastructure execution within President Hassan’s cabinet.

The nomination now moves to the National Assembly in Dodoma. Lawmakers will review and vote on Ndejembi’s appointment in line with constitutional requirements ahead of his formal swearing-in to succeed Nchimbi.
