In a major advance for public health across East Africa, the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) has officially launched Tanzania’s first specialised dental unit for children requiring sedation or general anaesthesia.

The facility, located within the MUHAS School of Dentistry in Dar es Salaam, addresses a long-standing structural gap in public dentistry: providing safe, comprehensive oral care to young patients who cannot tolerate conventional procedures because of severe dental anxiety, needle phobia, or complex developmental conditions.

 Strategic International Collaboration

The establishment of the specialised unit was achieved through an international partnership linking MUHAS with Ankara University and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA). As part of the initiative, TİKA supplied the facility with specialised paediatric dental tools, clinical sedation delivery systems, and emergency care equipment.

Beyond direct clinical delivery, the unit serves as an academic and surgical training hub for postgraduate students enrolled in MUHAS’s Master of Dentistry (MDent) programme in Paediatric Dentistry. This ensures that local clinicians receive hands-on training in modern sedation techniques, thereby building sustainable capacity within the national health system.

Transforming Outcomes for Vulnerable Patients

Historically, young children in Tanzania with acute tooth decay or dental trauma were treated in standard adult clinical settings. Due to the absence of dedicated paediatric sedation infrastructure, many were forced to undergo painful extractions rather than restorative, tooth-saving therapies.

The inauguration of the unit aligns with Tanzania’s national healthcare strategy to modernise clinical equipment, phase out mercury amalgam, and integrate specialised paediatric services into the public health framework. By combining advanced sedation capabilities with child-friendly infrastructure, the facility sets a new benchmark for accessible paediatric dentistry across the region.
