Anthony Peter Mavunde, born 2 March 1984, is a Tanzanian lawyer and politician serving as Minister of Minerals and Member of Parliament since September 2023, when President Samia Suluhu Hassan appointed him to the position during her third Cabinet reshuffle. The appointment marked his first full Cabinet role and placed him in charge of one of Tanzania’s most strategic sectors, overseeing mineral resource development, investment, and mining policy. A member of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) since 2006, Mavunde has steadily risen through the party’s youth structures, parliamentary leadership, and executive government, establishing himself as one of Tanzania’s prominent political figures.
Prior to his elevation to the Cabinet, Mavunde served as Deputy Minister for Agriculture from January 2022, during which he was involved in implementing government policies to strengthen agricultural productivity and food security.
Mavunde has represented Dodoma Urban Constituency in Tanzania’s Parliament since his election in the 2015 General Election, serving his first parliamentary term from 2015 to 2020. As a legislator, he has contributed to parliamentary oversight and policy discussions while simultaneously expanding his responsibilities within the executive branch.
His political career has been closely tied to CCM’s youth leadership structures. Between 2014 and 2017, he served as National Chairman for International Affairs and Labour Committee in the party’s Youth Wing (UVCCM). Earlier, from 2012 to 2017, he served on CCM’s National Executive Council, helping shape party policy and organisational direction. Between 2008 and 2012, he served as National Chairman for International Affairs and Labour Committee of UVCCM, having previously been elected to the Regional Executive Council of the youth wing after joining CCM in 2006 while studying at university.
Alongside his political career, Mavunde built a legal and business background. From 2013 to 2015, he served as Chief Executive Officer of FEMATA Company, while simultaneously working as Managing Partner at RGK Law Chambers Advocates between 2008 and 2015, gaining experience in legal practice, corporate management, and governance.
Academically, Mavunde holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Mzumbe University. He later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal and Practical Training at the Law School of Tanzania in 2010 before furthering his studies at the University of Dodoma in 2012. He completed his primary education in 1996, his Ordinary Level in 2003, and his Advanced Level in 2007.
