President Samia Suluhu Hassan stated on Tuesday that the violence following the country’s contested October election could jeopardise access to international funding. While swearing in government ministers, she mentioned that the incidents had damaged the country’s reputation and diminished its prospects of securing loans. She called on officials to concentrate on raising funds from domestic sources.
Tanzania remains financially reliant on external funding, with aid still accounting for approximately 23% of government revenue in 2023, although this proportion is decreasing. The election was marred by three days of clashes between protesters and security forces over the exclusion of Hassan’s main challengers.
